“Choosing the path less travelled, slowing down, enjoying the journey and appreciating the scenery – taking the scenic route – is the basis for my inspiration.”

 My name is Victoria McGrane and I’m the artist and textile designer behind The Scenic Route. My hand illustrated work is inspired by my love of travel, as I explore the amazing landscapes, seascapes, colours, flora and fauna of Australia. With my sketchbook under my arm and my camera at the ready, I observe the beautiful plants, animals, colours and landscapes that cross my path.

I’m a daydreamer with a big imagination. I come up with my best ideas when surrounded by nature – that’s why I’m travelling around Australia in Daisy, a 1990 Toyota Coaster which has been lovingly converted into a motorhome. My home on the road, furnished with The Scenic Route textiles, is designed for off-grid living with solar panels, solar battery storage and water tanks.

My appreciation for the environment is why I want to minimise my footprint and live sustainably. I’ve teamed up with Rainforest Rescue, designing calendars and fine art prints of the Daintree to raise funds for this vital not-for-profit, and have also partnered with Reef Restoration Foundation to raise funds for their coral conservation projects in the Great Barrier Reef. It’s also why I strive to use eco-friendly and sustainable raw materials, minimal packaging and recycled materials in my business wherever possible.

In 2020 my partner Darren Thomson joined The Scenic Route and he now manages the wholesale, admin and website. The Scenic Route is a small family business, artist owned and designed and run by us!

With a background in visual arts, a distinctive creative aesthetic and a career in fashion and textile design, I have collaborated with notable European and Australian brands to create unique surface print designs. I’m at my happiest and most productive when working on new prints, and am available for commissions and bespoke designs and existing designs.
